THE PROCESS OF NATURAL DYEING
WHAT IS NATURAL DYEING?
I have always been fascinated by the mysterious ways in which the colours of nature can be transferred to fabric through the art of natural dyeing.
A natural dye bath is simply created by soaking and simmering your chosen or gathered and foraged material in water. After about 25-30 minutes of low simmering, allow the material to rest. During this quiet pause, the colour begins to subtly transform, shifting and settling in ways that often hold delightful surprises. Over time, the material will slowly release its colour as the dye pigments are extracted.
For richer, deeper results, repeat the process several times.
Natural dyeing is a slow, mindful craft, perfect for these changing times. Whether you’re gathering walnut leaves in a quiet forest or foraging the first nettles in an urban alleyway, you can transform nature’s gifts into beautiful hues. With practice, you'll discover how to create an endless variety of shades and tones at home.

SLOW AND MINDFUL PROCESS
Living in different cultures and climates, it’s amazing how simple material found in our gardens, parks, wild ares and our own kitchen cupboards can all be natural dyes. There is a world of soft, subtle shades that contain infinite variety for dyeing. I hope they will become your own simple elements to explore and enjoy.
There is something unique and mysterious about natural dyes. They constantly surprise me. The vivid contrast between the outer colour we enjoy in nature and the subtle tones that emerge when gently steamed and simmered in water. I find that the best part in brewing them is that the slower you make them - the better they become.
Beyond the colours themselves, the process of natural dyeing offers a quiet, meditative space — a gentle antidote to the fast pace of modern life. The act of slowing down, tuning into the seasons, and working with your hands nurtures not just creativity, but also emotional wellbeing. It brings a sense of calm, presence, and grounding that many find deeply restorative.
For me, and for many who’ve embraced this craft, it becomes a form of nourishment — a way to reconnect with nature, inner stillness, and a more mindful way of living. In this slow rhythm, there’s space to breathe, reflect, and gently return to yourself.
